The brief

What was wrong with the old church office?

The office had been added to for years rather than designed. Files and books had outgrown the shelving and moved onto desks, windowsills and the floor, and storage was a mix of timber units bought at different times, none of it sized for what it was holding.

The result was an office that looked busy even when nobody was working. Staff had no clear surface to work on, no consistent place to put anything down, and no way to find a document without knowing which pile it was in.

The brief was not decorative. The church needed an office renovation that solved storage first and then gave every person a proper workstation — and it had to happen in two weeks, around a working office.

What we did

What we changed in the office renovation

Storage was rebuilt as built-in carpentry rather than freestanding units. A full-height run of open shelving and closed cabinets now carries the volume that used to sit on desks, with the items in daily use kept at eye level and everything else behind doors.

Above every workstation there is overhead storage, which is what removes the last of the desktop clutter. The palette is deliberately quiet — light oak against navy — so a wall of storage reads as part of the room rather than as furniture pushed against it.

The workstations were replaced as a single system with matched screens between desks. Consistency is what makes an open-plan office look calm: the old office had mismatched desks accumulated over years, and this is one design and build package resolved as a whole.

Before: what the old office was working with

The storage problem is visible in every one of these frames. That is why the renovation started with carpentry rather than with finishes.

Detail

Why height-adjustable desks were part of the brief

Each workstation is an L-shaped, height-adjustable desk. The L gives a primary work surface plus a return for the things that used to be stacked on the main desk, which is the layout reason the church asked for them.

Height adjustment was a welfare decision rather than a specification. Office staff sit for long stretches, and a desk that moves lets someone stand for part of the day without needing a separate space to do it in. It costs more per workstation than a fixed desk and it was included anyway.

The desks were supplied and installed in the same package as the carpentry, so storage heights and desk heights were resolved together rather than negotiated on site — the practical advantage of handling interior design and furniture as one scope.
